DISCOVERY GROUPS

“Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own.” (John 17:7)

When people in Jesus’ day listened to his teachings and obeyed them (put them into practice), they found out that God and his love and power were real. We want to do the same thing with Discovery Groups, using the simple method of Discovery Bible Study (DBS).

DBS might be different than Bible Study approaches you’ve been a part of or heard about before. A Discovery Group is good for everyone (the Bible is quite a book after all), but is especially designed for people who are spiritually interested and want to see what God might have to say about their lives.

How is it different?

First, the discussion is limited to just the Bible passage of the day (not pre-existing information or doctrinal views, etc.)— what does THIS PASSAGE say about God and people, and what might it say to our lives today? As much as we can, we want everyone in a DG to be on the same ground, even if one hasn’t opened the Bible in years— or ever.

Second, each person in a DG is coming to the Bible to hear what God might be saying to US. There’s no “leader” or subject matter expert— someone facilitates using seven basic questions, and we ask God to speak to each of us through his Holy Spirit.

Third, people’s lives didn’t change in Jesus’ day by adding a bunch of information to their brains. Bible “knowledge” is always experiential, relational, and active. DBS groups will end each week with each person forming a specific, measurable “I will” statement to help them put into practice what God is showing them, as well as a person they can share it with. Doing this will give God a practical chance to “show up” in our lives as we put Jesus’ teachings into action.

If you’d like to be in a Discovery Group… well, first of all, that’s awesome. We’re so pumped about what God does through these groups for people who want to seek him. Second, contact Joe Weakland at jweakland@ksu.edu to figure out your situation and get a group going for you. Some of the best groups are ones you bring a couple interested friends into and just do yourself after we help for 2-3 weeks to get you set up… but one way or another, we’ll make sure you get connected with one soon!
